Cusack;

Variant Spellings; Cusac, Cusic, Cusick, Cussac, Cussack, Cussick, Kissick, MacIosog, MacIsog, MacIssac.

Geoffrey and Andre de Cussac came to Ireland with King John in 1211 and were granted extensive estates in Meath and Kildare. Later they acquired territory in Mayo, Clare and Roscommon. The Cusacks were staunch Catholics and supporters of James 11 and as a result they lost most of their land in the forfeitures of 1701.

In Irish the name is translated as de Ciomhsog.

Sir John Cusack was involved in the defeat of Edward Bruce at the battle of Dundalk in 1318 while Thomas Cusack was mayor of Dublin in 1409. After the disastrous battle of the Boyne many Cusacks went to France, the land of their distant origin where Chevalier Richard Edmond Cusack (d.1770) became a general in the French army. Captain George Cusack (d.1674) was a notorious pirate.

Margaret Anne Cusack (1832-1899) is remembered as Ireland's first suffragette and was a nun who changed her religion several times as she tried to help the less fortunate. Michael Cusack (1860-1907) founded the Gaelic Athletic Association in Thurles Co. Tipperary. Cyril Cusack (1910-1992) was an actor of international repute.
