Dillon;

Variant Spellings; Denning, Dillane, Dillion, Dologhan.

Dillon is a Norman name though now completely associated with Ireland. Their territory almost covers all of modern West Meath with branches in Mayo and Roscommon. They were intimately associated with the government of the country upto the fall of the Stuarts.

In Irish the word is presently translated as Diolun and first came to Ireland in 1185 in the person of Sir Henry de Leon.

They were prominent in the Irish brigades in France where Dillon’s regiment was justly famous. They were created Counts of France and their descendents still live in that country.

In Ireland Wentworth Dillon (1633-1685) fourth Earl of Roscommon was a famous poet. John Blake Dillon (1816-1866) was a Young Irelander, his son John Dillon (1851-1927) an M.P. and his grandson James Dillon was a minister in the Government of the Republic.
