(O)Doherty;

Variant Spellings; Daugherty, Dehorty, Dogherty, Doherty, Dohorty, Dooherty, Doorty, Dorritty, Dougharty, Dougherty, MacDevitt, O'Doherty, O'Dougherty.

Above all O'Doherty is a Donegal name, originating in the barony of Raphoe and spreading into neighboring Inishowen. Nowadays the O prefix is being widely resumed by the sept, so much so that Doherty and O'Doherty births are about equal.

In Irish the name is O Dochartaigh meaning descended from Dochtarach. Dochartach means obstructive or stubborn.

Sir Cahir O'Dougherty (1587-1608) led an ill-timed and unsuccessful rebellion in 1608. Today the 37th O'Dohety chieftain is a Spanish physician, Dr. Ramon Salvador O'Doherty who lives in Cadiz.

John Dougherty (1783-1850) was a successful Crown prosecutor and later Lord Chief Justice. Kevin Izod O'Doherty (1823-1905) the Young Irelander was transported to Tasmania. William James O'Doherty (1835-1868) had a successful career in England as a sculptor.

Charles Joseph Doherty (1855-1931) Canadian Minister of Justice represented Canada at the League of Nations in 1920.

The motto in the O'Doherty coat of arm is Ar Nduthchas which may be translated as 'Our Nature'.
