The original territory of this sept was in counties Down and Antrim but after a defeat by the Normans in 1273 they moved west to Donegal. In this area they became hereditary physicians to the O'Donnells.
In Irish the name is MacDuinnshleihe or son of Duinnshleibh. The name is derived from donn (brown) and sliabh (mountain).
Fr. Christopher Dunlevy, O.F.M. was martyred in !644 and Rev. Andrew Donlevy (1694-1761) was Superior of the Irish College in Paris.
