(O)Donoghue;

Variant Spellings; Donohoe, Donaghoe, Donaghy, Donahoe, Donahy, Donocho, Donoghoe, Donohogue, Donoughoo.

The name is O Donnchadha in Irish and means descended from Donnchadh or Donogh. Several distinct septs of the name existed and the most important of these were O’Donoghue of Desmond, O’Donoghue of Ui Maine and O’Donoghue of Co. Cavan.

Today the latter two septs of the name are found in Counties Galway and Cavan while members of the first-mentioned sept live in Counties Kerry and Cork. These were originally in West Cork but were driven into Kerry by the McCarthys. They occupied the region called Onaght O’Donoghue.

The sept then split into two branches, O’Donoghue Mor and O’Donoghue of the Glen. During the Elizabethan wars O’Donoghue Mor was dispossessed while O’Donoghue of the Glen held on. Geoffrey O’Donoghue of the Glen (d. 1678), a great Gaelic poet and scholar was probably the last chief of the name.

Many of the O’Donoghues emigrated as ‘Wild Geese’ to the continent where they distinguished themselves. In Spain the name became O’Donoju; Don Juan O’Donoju (1751-1821) was the last Spanish viceroy of Mexico. When he signed the Treaty of Cardoba with Don Augustine de Iturbide on August 24, 1821, centuries of Spanish domination of Mexico were brought to an end and the foundation for Mexican independence was laid. Don Juan O'Donoju died soon afterwrds on October 18, 1821.

Donnchadh O’Donoghue founded Jerpoint Abbey in the twelfth century. There were several literary O’Donoghues; Patrick O’Donoghue who founded the Boston Pilot and David James O’Donoghue author of The Poets of Ireland for example.
