(O)Donovan;

Variant Spellings; Dingavan, Donovan, Donovane, McDonovane, O'Donovan, O'Donovane.

In Irish the name is O Donnabhain, apparently two Gaelic words donn (brown) and dubhan (black) form the name.

The O'Donovans are a famous old Irish family who were originally settled in Co. Limerick but after the Norman invasion they are found in their present territory of southwest Co. Cork.

Nowadays most are assuming the O prefix to the name.

The O'Donovan infantry regiment was one of the best in the army of King James II and their support of that king and his Catholic cause ruined the family. After the disastrous battle of the Boyne many of the name served in the Irish Brigades of different continental armies.

The most famous O'Donovan was the Fenian, Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (1831-1815) and it was at his funeral that the revolutionary Padraig Pearse gave an impassioned address.
