(O)Doran;

Variant Spellings; Adorian, Doran, Dorian, Dornan, Dornian, Dorran, Dorrian, O'Dornan, Odarian.

The O'Dorans were one of the seven Septs of Leix though many of their leading families were transported to Kerry after the O'Neill rebellion. The name is also found today in Co. Wexford and in Armagh; in Down it is often seen as the variant Dorrian.

In Irish the name is O Deoradhain and is derived from deoradh, an exile.

Most Rev. Patrick Dorrian (1814-1885) was bishop of Down and Connor;

Dr. John Dorian (1807-1878), was a poet and historian. Maurice Dorian (d.1523), Bishop of Leighlin was murdered by his archdeacon.
