(O)Doyle;
Variant Spellings; Dol, Dooal, Dyle, MacDowell, O'Doyle.
In Irish this name is O Dubhghaill and as dhubh-ghall (dark foreigner) was a name given to the Vikings, so it would seem that this family is of ancient and Norse origin. The Mac Dowells, often a synonym of Doyle, and translated as Mac DubhGhaill or 'son of the dark foreigner' is a family descended from Scottish gallowglasses and now found in county Roscommon.
Today the Doyles are found mainly in the counties of Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow, while the MacDowells are in county Roscommon.
From 1756-1856 there were six generals of the Doyle family in the British army. When members of the Doyle family went to France as Wild Geese they were known as Doyley and Doyelle.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was, of course, the inventor of Sherlock Holmes. Henry Edward Doyle (1827-1892), was a painter and a director of the National Gallery of Ireland.
Jack Doyle (1913-1978), the "Gorgeous Gael" was a boxer, wrestler and a charming playboy.
