This name is found through the island but their main territories are in counties Roscommon and Donegal. The sept is notorious for its association with religion, not only in its production of clerics but also of artisans who dealt in religious art; for instance they were responsible for making the Cross of Cong.

James Duffy (1809-1871) founded the Dublin publishing company, James Duffy and Company. Sir Charles Gavan Duffy (1816-1903) was a Young Islander and Member of Parliament; he emigrated to Australia where he became Premier of Victoria. His son Sir Frank Gavan Duffy (1852-1936) was Chief Justice of Australia.

Father Francis P. Duffy was chaplain to the 'Fighting 69th Regiment' of New York and he wrote of his experiences in the First World War.
