There are two main septs of the MacDermots and the territories of both are in County Roscommon. The sept that descended from the O'Connors had their main fortress in Lough Ce while the MacDermot-Roe sept was located at Alderford Co. Roscommon. Nowadays the name is rarely found without its prefix.

In Irish the name is MacDiarmada or son of Diarmuid. The eponymous ancestor of the Lough Ce MacDermots was Diarmuid O Maelruanaidh King of Moylurg from 1124 to 1159.

In 1599 Conor Og MacDermot together with the help of Brian Og O Rourke routed the English under Sir Conyers Clifford. In the years since, the Irish have mainly waged guerrilla war.

The MacDermots were Jocobite in their sympathies and they lost much of their lands as a result.

Hugh Hyacinth O Rorke MacDermot (1834-1904) was Solicitor General for Ireland, Attorney General and a member of the Privy Council. Martin McDermott (1823-1905), was a Young Irelander and wrote poetry for The Nation and Sean Mac Diarmada (1884-1916) was executed in May 1916 for his part in the Easter Rising.

The motto of the MacDermot coat of arms is 'Honor Probataque Virtus'.
