In Irish the name is Mac Aodhagain and is translated as son of Aodh or Hugh. The name is a double diminutive of the word aodh 'fire'. The family were hereditary lawyers and are to be found mainly in Tipperary, Offaly and Kilkenny. They were attached as brehons to the chiefs in that area,
Owen Mac Egan (1570-1603) Bishop-designate of Ross was killed in battle in the Tyrone rebellion.
Two Pierce Egans (1772-1849) and (1814-1880) were popular novelists, while John Egan (1750-1810), a patriot member of Parliament was a notorious duelist.
The motto of the coat of arms of the Eganst is Fortitudine et Prudencia which is translated to 'Fortitude and Prudence'.
