Variant Spellings; England, Englishe, Gallogly, Golagley, Golightly, Gology, Inglis, Ingoldsby, MacGallogly.
It is strange to find the name English as an Irish name; the name however has been in the country since the time of the Norman invasion and today is thoroughly Irish. The name is spread widely through Ireland especially in Munster and Ulster.
In medieval times the name has been spelt as Lenglais, L'Englys and L'Angley. When Scottish mercenaries came to Ireland they were called gallowglasses or Galloglach, as a result the name English in Ulster became Mac an Galloglaigh (son of the gallowglass).
In Irish the name is translated as Aingleis.
At the date of the suppression of the monasteries in 1536 John Englishe alias Ynglysshe was abbot of Bective Abbey.
Father William English (d.1778) was a noted Gaelic poet, while the Inglish family produced two Protestant bishops of Nova Scotia. Sir John Inglish, the defender of Lucknow was a Donegal man.
