(Mac)Enchroe;

Variant Spellings; Crowe, Mac, Mack, McEnroe, MacEnroe.

Mac Conchradha is the Irish form of the name, though it seems that the English form of Crowe is more common in the original territory of the sept, i.e., Thormond. Today the majority of the Crowes live in Clare or Tipperary though some may have migrated to the urban centers of the country especially Dublin. The Crowe name is also common in Belfast but it is thought that these are British planted descendents.

Skaghvicencrowe, which means the thorn bush of MacEnroe, is a place name near Mount Callan in Co. Clare.

Dermot MacEncroe, whose family emigrated to France from Co. Clare, was an author of Latin poems. The family used the name de la Croix as a French translation of MacEncroe. Rev. John McEnroe (1798-1868) founded the Freeman’s Journal in Sydney and was responsible for an edition of Donlevy’s Catechism.

The present day MacEnroes have produced the talented and temperamental world class tennis player, John MacEnroe.

The motto of the MacEnroe coat of arms is in Gaelic 'Skeagh Mac Enchroe' and is translated as 'The Thornbush of MacEnchroe'.
