O'Donnell;

Variant Spellings; Daniel, Danly, Donald, Donnal, Donnell, Donellan, Donnelly, McDonnell, O'Donnelly

O'Donnell is a common name in present day Ireland and is found mainly in three separate areas. Co. Donegal has always been associated with the O'Donnells and that particular sept is said to originate in the district of Kilmacrenan. The other O'Donnell septs are to be found in West county Clare and county Galway.

In Irish the name is O Domhnaill meaning descended from Domnhnall or Donal in English.

Red Hugh O'Donnell (1571-1602) was a strong opponent of the English defeating them in many battles. After the disaster at Kinsale he went to Spain where he died of poison allegedly administered by a British agent. Red Hugh had such an adventurous life that even Hollywood made a movie about him. In the film he is titled "The Fighting Prince of Donegal". Rory O'Donnell (1575-1608) and Sir Niall Garv O'Donnell (1569-1626), who spent 27 years in the Tower of London were relatives of Red Hugh.

Frank Hugh O'Donnell (1846-1916), was an M.P. and John Francis O'Donnell (1837-1874) was editor of The Nation. Dr. James Louis O'Donnell was a bishop in Newfoundland and Patrick O'Donnell (1856-1927) was a cardinal in the Catholic Church.
