O'Farrell is a Co. Longford name and in fact the seat of the sept chief Longphuirt Ui Fearghaill gave Co. Longford its name. There are two main branches of the sept, the O'Farrell Boy (buidhe, fair) and the O'Farrell Ban (ban, white).
In Irish the name is O Fearghaill or descended from Fearghall.
The O'Farrells paid dearly for their opposition to the English; their territories were diminished and members went as 'Wild Geese' to the continent.
Richard More O'Farrell (1797-1880) was a supporter of Daniel O'Connell and Sir Thomas O'Farrell (1827-1900) was a noted Dublin sculptor.
In Mexico the family uses the O'Farrill variant of the name.
