Fitzgibbon;

Variant Spellings; Fitzgibbons, Gibben, Gibbings, Gibbins, Gibbon, Gibbons, Gobin, O'Kibbon.

Fitzgibbon is a Norman name and it consists of two main septs. The largest of these is in county Mayo and they are descended from one MacGibbon Burke. The other sept is found, in the main, in county Limerick, where the name is often changed to Gibbons. The White Knight of Co. Limerick is a Fitzgibbon.

In Irish the name is translated as Mac Giobhain or son of Giobhan.

John Gibbons was involved in the 1798 rising and was captured and later escaped to France. His son John who also took part in that rebellion was hanged in Westport in 1798. John Fitzgibbon (1749-1802), Lord Chancellor of Ireland was a noted and despised Unionist.

In the US Cardinal John Gibbons (1834-1921), was Archbishop of Baltimore.
