Fitzpatrick;
Variant Spellings; Fitch, Fitchpatrick, Fitz, Fitzpatrick, Gillpatrick, Killpaztrick, Kilpatrick, Kirkpatrick, Kirpatrick, Macgilpatrick, MacGilpatrick, MacKilpatrick, McGillpatrick, McIlpatrick, Paragon, Parrican, Patchy, Patrician, Patrick, Petherick, Shera.
Fitzpatrick, that most Norman looking of Irish names is not Norman, it is in fact a translation of the old Gaelic family name of Macgilpatrick. Their territory was in the counties of Leix and Kilkenny.
The Fitzpatricks were one of the first septs to receive English titles, one Barnaby Fitzpatrick receiving a knighthood from Henry VIII in1568. Even though, like many Irish septs, they lost much in the Jacobite wars, the chief of the Fitzpatricks was elevated to the peerage in 1714.
In Irish the name is Mac Giolla Phadraig or 'The Son of the Servant of Patrick'. One branch of the Fitzpatricks took the name Mac Seartha, 'The son of Seartha'. Seartha being the Christian name of one of their chieftains.
Patrick Vincent Fitzpatrick (1792-1865) was an associate of Daniel O'Connell. William John Fitzpatrick (1830-1895) was a biographer and Thomas Fitzpatrick (1832-1900) an eminent physician.
The motto of the Fitzpatrck coat of arms is 'Ceart Laidir Abu' which translates as 'Right, Strenght to Victory'.
