(O)Flanagan is a Connacht name being found mainly in Co. Roscommon and also in Mayo, Galway and Clare. Their eponymous ancestor was named Flanagan and his line were hereditary stewards to the Kings of Connacht.
In Irish the name is O Flanagain meaning descended from Flanagan; flann being the Gaelic adjective for ruddy complexioned.
Donough O'Flanagan (d. 1308), bishop of Elphin was noted for his hospitality. Roderick Flanagan (1628-1861), founded the Sidney Chronicle, while James Roderick Flanagan (1814-1900), wrote extensively on Irish subjects.
Theophilus Flanagan (1760-1818) was a leader in the Gaelic revival movement.
