Ford;
Variant Spellings; Foran, Foard, Foorde, Ford-McAnar, Forde, Forhane, MacEnawe, MacEnaw, MacKinnawe.
Ford or Forde is a name that is common in both England and Ireland. It is difficult to trace your ancestry if your name is Ford as three different Irish septs become Ford in English and an English family named Ford also settled in Co. Meath.
The Fords known in Irish as Mac Giolla na Naomh (Son of the Servant of the Saint) or Macgiollarnath lived in south County Galway; those known as Mac Consnamma (Son of the Swimming Hound), MacKinnawe in English had land near Lough Allen.
A third sept of O Fuarthain is to be found in County Cork.
Patrick Forde (1835-1913), was a journalist in the United States and founded The Irish World; Samuel Forde (1805-1828) was a painter. Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company.
