Variant Spellings; Callagher, Galagher, Gallaher, Gallaugher, Galliher, Gallihur, Gallogher, Gallougher, Gollagher, Golligher, Gollocher, Gollogher, Golloher, Gologher.

Gallagher is one of the commonest names in Ireland and nowadays does not usually have the prefix. Their territory was in Donegal where they were loyal to the O’Donnells and their chiefs were marshals of the O’Donnell armed forces.

In Irish the name is O Gallchobhair meaning the descendent of Gallchobhar. It is derived from the words gall 'foreigner' and cabhair 'help'.

The family was prominent in church affairs and furnished six bishops of Raphoe in the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Most Rev. Redmond O’Gallagher (1521-1601) befriended the survivors of the Spanish Armada and was executed for his religious beliefs.

In America Father Hugh Gallagher(1851-1882) was a ‘frontier priest’; William Davis Gallagher (1808-1894), an American poet was son of a participant in Robert Emmet’s Rebellion.
