The Irish Mag Shamhradhain gives rise to the names Mac Govern and Magauran. The name means 'Son of Samhradhan'. Today the name is usually given as MacGovern rather than Magauran. It is a diminutive of samhradh or 'summer'.
The sept is found mainly in north-west Co. Cavan where there is a village called Ballymagauran, which was in fact was burned by the Maguires in 1481.
Edmund Maguaran, Archbishop of Armagh was martyred for his faith in 1595. Hugh Magauran was a Gaelic Poet of the O'Naughten circle.
John MacGovern (1850-1917) was an American novelist and Senator George MacGovern ran unsuccessfully for the Presidency of the US.
The MacGoverns in Argentina are of Irish origin and an important family in that country.
