(Mac)Glynn;
Variant Spellings; Ginn, Glann, Glenn, Glennon, Glinn, Glyn, Maginn, McGinn, McGlin, McGloin, McGlone, McGlynn, Meggin,
This sept originated in Westmeath and over the centuries has spread west to Connacht and north to Donegal. The Mac prefix is gradually being restored but the Glynns still outnumber the MacGlynns. Glynn is used as a synonym for Glennon and Glenn but MacGloin, which is sometimes used in the same manner, has a completely different origin.
In Irish the name in Mag Fhloinn and is derived from flann meaning ruddy-complexioned.
Rev. Boneventure Maglin was the vicar provincial of the Franciscan order in 1654; Rev. Martin Glynn (1729-1794) was the last rector of the Irish College in Bordeaux and was guillotined during the French Revolution. John and Joseph Glynn were promoters of the Gaelic revival in Ireland and Martin Henry Glynn (1871-1924) was governor of New York.
