Grace;

Variant Spellings; Gracey.

The Grace family is descended from Raymond le Gros who came to Ireland with Strongbow's invasion and was viceroy in 1176. Their original territory was in County Kildare and later they are to be found in Carlow, Kilkenny and Leix.

The name is rendered phonetically in Irish as Gras.

The Graces were Jacobite in their sympathies and lost much of their property through supporting the Stuarts.

Col. Richard Grace (d. 1691) fought in the Cromwellian and Williamite wars and was killed at the siege of Athlone when he was 70 years old. John Grace (1734-1811) escorted Marie Antoinette on her journey to France when he was an officer in the Austrian Army.
