The Gaelic name of MacGrath is to be found in Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland there are two main septs of the name one originating in Ulster and the other in Munster. The territory of the Ulster sept is on the border between Donegal and Fermanagh, while in Munster the name is found in southern Co. Clare. The Munster MacGraths were hereditary poets to the O'Briens of Thormond.
Today due to spread with time MacGraths are to be seen in counties Waterford and Tipperary, while in Ulster they are found mainly in Tyrone.
In Irish the name is given as Mac Craith or 'son of Craith'.
The notorious Miller MacGrath (1523-1622), started out as a Catholic and became the Protestant Archbishop of Cashel. Andrew MacGrath (d.1790) was a Gaelic poet in the best MacGrath tradition. Joseph MacGrath took part in the 19116-1921 Irish War of Independence and founded the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes.
In the United States Rev. James MacGrath (1835-1898) was Provincial of the Oblates and Andrew Condon MacGrath (1813-1893) was a judge, Governor of Carolina and sympathized with the South in the Civil War.
