(O)Grogan;
Variant Spellings; Groggan, Groogan, Grugan, McGrogan, O'Grugane, O'Growgane, O'Gruogan.
This is a sept that seems to have permanently lost its O prefix. Nowadays the name is to be found scattered throughout the country in counties as far apart as Limerick and Wexford; it is also to be found in Kerry, Offaly and Tipperary.
In Irish the name is O Gruagain or descended from Gruagan.
Cornelius Grogan (1738-1798) a Co. Wexford landowner joined the rebellion of 1798 and was executed, while his brother John Grogan fought for the British and was also killed in that insurrection. Sir John Grogan (1802-1891) was a long time member in the British Parliament for Dublin City.
