(Mac)Gee;

Variant Spellings; Gee, Ghee, Guiheen, Guihen, MacKay, MacKey, Magee, McCay, McGee, McGhee, McGhie, McGuiehan, McHay, McKee, McKey, McQuay, Winn, Wynn, Wynne.

In Irish the name is Mag Aodha (son of Hugh); the prefix Mac becomes Mag when followed by a vowel. This explains the common English spelling of the name as Magee. The Ulster Magees are of Scottish extraction and came to Ireland in the Ulster plantation of the early seventeenth century.

There are Gaelic Magees also and they belong on the borders of Tyrone and Donegal while the Scottish group is associated with Co. Antrim, especially in the area east of Lough Larne.

Because of their ancestry prominent Magees were usually of the Protestant faith. Most Rev. William Magee (1766-1831), the mathematician was Archbishop of Dublin and Martha Magee (1755-1846) founded Magee University College in Derry. The brothers Thomas D’Arcy Magee (1825-1868) and James E. Magee (1830-1880) were Catholics and members of the Young Ireland Movement.

In the United States three prominent citizens John McGee (1853-1912), geologist, Charles McClung McGhee (1828-1907), f.inancier, and Christopher Lyman Magee (1848-1901), politician illustrate various spellings of the name in that country.
