In Irish the name is MagAonghusa or 'son of Aonghus'. The family is descended from Saran, chief of Dal Airaidhe in St. Patricks time, also they were able to take advantage of the English policy of surrender and regrant in the seventeenth century. At the time of the Reformation they were receptive of the new religion; in fact two of the Magennises were conforming bishops, the bishop of Down and the bishop of Dromore. However in1598 the Magennis joined the rebellion of Tyrone and in the next century the family returned to the old faith. The Magennises resisted the English aggressions in the seventeenth century and were dispossessed of their wide territories in Co. Down after the Irish defeat at the battle of the Boyne.
Many went to the continent as Wild Geese where they distinguished themselves in the seervice of European crowns. Brian Magennis, second Viscount Iveagh was the colonel of the Iveagh Regiment of the Austrian Imperial Army and was killed in action in 1703. His brother Roger, third Viscount Iveagh served with distinction in both France and Spain.
The present Lord Iveagh is the head of Guinness Breweries of Ireland and England. The Guinness family has been generous in improving the housing for the poor of Dublin and in providing means for the upkeep of St. Patricks Cathedral, Dublin.
The American General John R. MacGuinness was born in Dublin.
