MacGuire;

Variant Spellings; Guare, MacGivir, MacGuire, Maguire, McGuire.

The territory of the Maguires is in Co. Fermanagh for the most part and it is the commonest name in that county. The name also appears in Connacht but there the spelling is usually MacGuire. The family suffered severely in the Ulster plantation and their support of the Jacobite cause led to further deprivation.

The Maguires left for the continent with the 'Wild Geese' and in France were accepted into the French nobility.

In Irish the name is Mac Uidhir or 'Son of Odhar'. Odhar was reputed to be St. Patrick's chariot driver

Hugh Maguire successfully commanded the cavalry at the battle of the Yellow Ford and the family also supplied notable bishops in their territory. Connor Maguire (1616-1645) was executed for his part in the rebellion of 1641 while Thomas Maguire (1831-1889) was the first Catholic to be elected to a fellowship at Trinity College, Dublin.
