Hackett is a Norman name and the Hacketts came to Ireland with the Norman invasion. They quickly acquired land in counties Dublin and Kildare although today the name is found mostly in Kilkenny and Tipperary.
The name is derived from Haket, a Norman personal name, in Irish it is Haiceid.
Peter Hackett was Archbishop of Cashel at the end of the fourteenth century and John Hackett (d.1676) was a personal friend of Pope Clement X and, as a result, a man of some influence in Rome. Thomas Hackett (1805-1876), was secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society.
