( O)Halloran;
Variant Spellings; Hallaron, Hallorin, Halloron, Holloran, O"Hallaran, O'Halleran, O'Halleron, O'Halloran.
There are two seperate septs of the O'Hallorans. One located in Co. Galway had extensive territory near Lough Corrib, the other is to be found in Co. Clare with a spread into Co. Limerick.
In Irish the name is O hAllmhurain meaning descended from Allmhuran. The name is derived from two Gaelic words all 'beyond' and muir 'sea'. Apparently the original O'Hallorans were regarded as foreigners.
O'Hallorans of distinction are Dr. Sylvester O' Halloran (1728-1807), historian and Gaelic languge scholar and his brother Rev. Joseph Ignatius O'Halloran (1718-1843), Professor of Philosophy at Bordeaux. Sir Joseoph O'Halloran (1763-18423) served with distinction for fifty years in the British army. Laurence Haynes O'Halloran (1766-1831) poet and wanderer was transported to Australia.
The motto of the O'Hallorans is 'Clann Fearghall Abu' which is translated as 'The Clan of the Foreigner to Victory'.
