O'Hanlon is an Ulster name from Co. Armagh though in recent times it is also found in Co. Cork. The O'Hanlons were able to retain much of their territory by diplomacy until the Williamite wars. However, their Jacobite sympathies cost them and they joined the 'Wild Geese' movement to the continent.
In Irish the name is O hAnluain or descended from Anluan; the name may be derived from the Irish for great champion.
Rev. John O'Hanlon (18721-1905) wrote books of Irish interest.
