The Hegarty sept originated in the borders of counties Donegal and Derry and the Hegartys of County Cork are a branch of this sept.
In Irish the name is O hEigceartaigh and is derived from eigceart or unjust.
The O'Hegartys were prominent as 'Wild Geese', for instance Peter O'Hegarty was created Governor of the Isle of Bourbon. Daniel O'Hegarty founded the first Masonic lodge in France in 1721 and was a shipbuilder. P. S. O'Hegarty (1879-19550 was an author and revolutionary.
