In Irish the name is O hUallachain meaning descended from Uallachan and originates in County Offaly. By 1659 the sept had migrated south to Kilkenny. Today they are found there and in Clare where the name is usually spelled as Houlihan. In County Cork many families of the O’Houlihans changed the name to Holland.

It was Dermot O’Holohan who built the bridge of curraghs across the Shannon to help O’Sullivan Beare on his March to Ulster in 1602.

The most famous of the Hollands was John Holland (1841-1914) the American inventor and father of the submarine.
