Hoare;

Variant Spellings; Hore, Horahoe, Horohoe.

This family is descended from Philipe le Hore who came to Ireland with Strongbow's invasion. They quickly became established in Co. Wexford; there was also a branch in Co. Cork but they may have come from two officers in Cromwell's army.

The name is said to be derived from the Anglo-Saxon word hoar meaning white. In Irish it is rendered phonetically as de Hora.

The Hores were Stuart in sympathy and suffered the usual deprivations for it. Brother Matthew Hore was martyred in 1631 while Sir Joseph Hore voted against the act of union in 1800 even though he was 93 years old and totally blind.

The Hore motto is 'Constanter'.
