(O) Hurley;

Variant Spellings; Commane, Harley, Herley, Herly, O’Murhila, Murrily, O’Herlihy.

The surname Hurley in English is adopted by two different Irish septs; the O hUirthile of Co. Limerick and the O Muirthile of Co. Cork.

Of the Co. Limerick Hurleys, O’Hurley of Knocklong Castle and Sir Maurice O’Hurley took part in the rebellion of 1646. Dermot O’Hurley (1519-1584), Archbishop of Cashel was tortured and hanged for his struggle against the English. The informer Patrick Hurley was tried and convicted in 1700.

There are Hurleys from Co. Clare who have adopted the name of Commane, as caman in Irish is a hurley stick.

Of the Cork Hurleys, John O’Murily became bishop of Ross in1517. Brother Donogh O’Muirhily was martyred for his religion in 1586. Thomas O’Herlihy, Bishop of Ross was forced to abdicate in 1570 and was then incarcerated in the Tower of London until his death.
