MacInerney;
Variant Spellings; Connerney, Keverney, Kinerney, Kinry, Kinnerk, Mac Inerney, Mack, McAnern, McAnerney, Mc Enerny, McEnery, McInerney, McInnerney, McKerniry, Nerney.
The name means the son of the erenagh and in Irish is Mac an Airchinnigh. The erenagh was a steward of lands for the church and originally it was an ecclesiastical office.
The erenaghs of Elphin and of Tuam took the surname Mac an Airchinnigh and descendants of the former are still to be found in Co. Roscommon but they are now mostly called Nerney.
The MacInerneys of Co. Clare are more numerous. They are still there though the sept lost its lands in the Cromwellian confiscations. An alternative form of the name, Kinnerk, is also found in Co. Clare.
Fr. M. H. MacInerny was the author of The History of the Irish Dominicans.
