The first authentic record of a Joyce in Ireland was a Thomas de Jorse (Joyce), a Welshman who married the daughter of O’Brien, Prince of Thormond in 1283.
The family moved to Iar Connacht in Co. Galway, where they were tributary to the O’Flahertys. They became firmly established so much so that that territory is known as Joyce country to this day. They became completely Gaelic even to the extent of having a chief of the name.
In Co. Mayo the name sometimes becomes Shoye an English phonetic equivalent for the name in Irish, Seoighe.
Several of the Joyces were mayors of Galway, where the family was one of the"Fourteen Tribes". The Joyces provided two Archbishops of Armagh from 1307 to 1324 and one Archbishop of Tuam from1487 to 1501.
In modern times the family produced James Joyce (1882-1941), thought by many to be the foremost writer in English in the twentieth century. Patrick Weston Joyce (1827-1914) was a historian and author of Irish Names of Places. His brother Robert Dwyer Joyce (1830-1883) was a well-known American physician and poet.
