Keating;
Variant Spellings; Clayton, Keaty, MacKeating, McKetian.
The name is common both in England and in Ireland. The Keatings came to Ireland with the Norman invasion and settled in county Wexford, later they spread to other areas in Leinster. The sept became completely hibernicized and suffered for their Jacobite allegiance.
An Irish sept called O Ceathfada has often been known as Keating in English.
John Keating (d.1695) was a Lord Chief Justice and General Thomas Keating (d.1796) was prominent in the French revolution.
In our own time Charles Keating was involved in the collapse of the savings and loan banking system in the US.
