Variant Spellings; Cuhy, Kehoe, Keogh, Keoghoe, Keoghy, Keough, Kough, McCahaugh, McKeogh, OHoey, Hoy, Haughey, Haugh, Hough.
In Irish the name is Mac Eochaidh, son of Eochadh and is found today in Roscommon, Limerick, Tipperary and Wexford.
The most important sept were the Keoghs of Leinster where they were hereditary bards to the OByrne family. As the OByrnes migrated from Kildare to Wicklow and later to Co Wexford the Keoghs moved with them.
The family produced many fine poets and in 1534 Maolmiuire Mac Keogh was the Chief Poet of Leinster.
Matthew Keogh (1744-1798) was prominent in the 1798 rebellion and was hanged for it. John Keogh (1740-1814) was a leader in the Catholic cause before OConnell.
In America Captain Myles Walter Keogh (1849-1876) was a Federal officer in the civil war there and died at the Little Bighorn where his horse was the only survivor.
O hEochach is translated in English as Hoey or Huey and is found mostly in Ulster. While Haughey may be found in Counties Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.
John Cashel Hoey was the editor of the Nation; Charles Haughey became Prime Minister of Ireland.
