Lacey;
Variant Spellings; Lacy, Leacy, de Lacey.
The de Lacys are a Norman family that came to Ireland in that twelfth century invasion. They acquired large tracts of land in the center of the country in the person of Hugh de Lacy. These passed out of the family through failure of the male line.
Nowadays the name is found mostly in Co. Limerick. The Lacys are an example of a family who became more Irish than the Irish themselves and they have always supported the cause of their new country.
In Irish the name is translated as de Leis.
Some of the prominent de Lacys were Most. Rev. Hugh de Lacy who was removed as bishop of Limerick by Elizabeth I in 1571 and who was executed for his religion in 1581. Though he was only thirteen Pierce Lacey (1678-1751) took a prominent part in the siege of Limerick in 1691; later he became Count de Lacy in the service of Peter the Great of Russia. His son Francis Maurice de Lacy (1725-1801) was an Austrian field marshal. Count Francis Anthony de Lacy (1731-1791) was a diplomat and a distinguished Spanish general.
