(O)Lally;
Variant Spellings; Mulally, O'Mulally.
The O'Mulallys have always lived in Connacht, though after the Norman invasion they were driven northwards by the Burkes. They eventually settled in the area around Tuam, Co. Galway.
In Irish the name is O Maolalaidh.
The O'Mulallys were important in the era of the 'Wild Geese' and provided many distinguished exiles to the continent. The most important of these was Thomas Arthur O'Mulally or Count Lally de Tolendal. Count Lally was an effective general in the French army, although he was defeated in India by the British at the battle of Wandiwash. The French may be said to have lost India at that battle and Count Lally was shot for dereliction of duty when he returned home. Since that time his trial has been declared a travesty of justice and the judgement reversed.
