(O)Lalor;

Variant Spellings; Lawlor, Lawler.

O Leathlaobhair in Gaelic means descended from the half-leper. In modern time these families have not as a rule resumed the O prefix.

Their territory was in the area the Rock of Dunamase, Co. Leix and they were driven from there to Kerry by the English in Queen Elizabeth’s time. The surname is still plentiful in Leix as the ordinary O’Lalors stayed while their leaders were transplanted.

In the massacre of Mullaghmast in 1577 many of the O’Lalors, O’Moores and other innocents of Co Leix were ambushed by the English with the help of the O’Dempseys.

James Fintan Lawlor (1807-1849) was a revolutionary and his brother Peter (1823-1889) led the miners at Eureka, Australia in1854, he later became Speaker of the Legislative Council of Victoria.

John Lawlor (1820-1901) the sculptor has work throughout England and Ireland. Alice Lalor (1766-1846), known in the states as ‘Mother Teresa’ was a noted religious figure.
