The name MacLoughlin is in use as the English translation of two different Gaelic names. The first of these is Mac Lochlainn or son of Lochlann. Although the name appears Norse in origin it is a genuinely Gaelic one. The sept was a branch of the O'Neills and their territory was in Co. Donegal.
The other sept carrying the name in English was the O'Melaghlins of Co Meath. This sept changed to MacLoughlin after the wars of 1691. As can be seen this was originally was an O name being O Maoilsheachlainn or 'follower of Seachlann'. They claim as their ancestor Maoilseachlann one of the last of the Irish High Kings.
