Lynch;

Variant Spellings; Lynchahan, Lynchy.

The name Lynch has both a Norman and Gaelic origin. Lynch is the anglicized form of the Norman, de Lench and the native Irish O Loingsigh. The Norman family has been prominent in the affairs of Galway City where they were the most influential of ‘the tribes of Galway’.

Dominick Lynch procured the city’s charter from Richard III in 1484 and from then until 1654 when Catholics were barred from civic offices no less than eighty-four Lynches were mayors of Galway.

Some famous Lynches were Rev. John Lynch (1599-1673) who wrote Cambrensis Eversus; while the centenarian Archbishop of Tuam, Most Rev. James Lynch (1609-1713) continued to administer his diocese though imprisoned.

In1493 James Lynch who was mayor of Galway hung his own son for an offence that merited the death penalty.

The Gaelic Lynches comprise a number of distinct septs that have territory in such separate as Clare, Sligo, Donegal, Cork, Tipperary and Limerick. These families have produced a number of interesting people. From Breffny came Dr. John Joseph Lynch (1616-1888), Bishop of Toronto; Col. Charles Lynch (1736-1796) who gave rise to the phrase ‘to lynch’. Thomas Lynch (1749-1779) was the youngest of the signatories of the declaration of Independence; his family has been in America for three generations at the time.

Count John Baptist Lynch was a peer of France and the grandson of an officer who went to France with James II. Patricio Lynch (1824-1886) has been called ‘The foremost Chilean naval hero’. Hannah Lynch (1862-1904) was a leading figure in the Ladies Land League and finally John Lynch, who in 1966 was the first Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of the republic who played no part in the revolutionary period.
