Madden is not an uncommon name in England and some English families of the name received land in Co. Kildare. Our Irish Maddens are a Galway sept and live in east Galway near the Shannon where they were under the lordship of the Burkes.

In Irish the name is O Madadhain and is derived from mada meaning a hound or dog.

Of this family, Rev. Samuel Madden (1686-1765) was a philanthropist, while Daniel Owen Madden and Thomas Moore Madden were both writers.
