MacMahon;

Variant Spellings; Maghan, Mahon, Mahony, Mann, Maughan, McMahon.

There are two septs that bear the name Mac Mahon. One of these is in Co. Clare, the other in Co Monaghan. The Clare sept claims descent from Murtagh Mor O'Brien, who was King of Ireland in the Twelfth century.

The name in Irish is Mac Mathghamha or 'son of Mathghamha'.

In the Mac Mahon family there were three Archbishops of Armagh; Bernard MacMahon (1680-1747), his brother Ross Roe MacMahon (1698-1748) and their uncle Hugh MacMahon.

Heber MacMahon (1600-1650), bishop of Clogher was a leader of the Catholic Confederation and of the Ulster army. Col. Art MacMahon's infantry regiment was famous in King James II Irish army.

Patrick MacMahon (1808-1892) was descended from 'Wild Geese' emigrants and became President and Marshal of France.

The motto of the Oriel MacMahons is 'So Dorn Dona Dhubhfuiltibh' while that of the Thormond sept is 'Sic Nos Sic Sacra Tuemur'.
