O'Malley is a Co. Mayo name and is one of the few from the O prefix has been rarely dropped. The name in Irish is O Maille or 'descended from Maille'. The family was always a noted seafaring one and Grace O'Malley (1530-1600) or Graine Ni Maille as she was known in Gaelic was known as the "Pirate Queen" of Connacht and and was involved in rebellion in that province for over forty years.
Austin O'Malley (d.1854), the United Irishman fought on the side of the French at Castlebar in 1798. George O'Malley (1780-1843) distinguished himself at Waterloo and was the father of the French Army general Patrick O'Malley (d. 1869).
Frank Ward O'Malley (1875-1932) was a noted US wit and writer.
The motto of the coat of arms of the O'Malleys is 'Terra Marique Potens' which may be translated as 'Powerful on Land and Sea'.
