Martin;

Variant Spellings; Gillmartin, Gillmartine, McGillmartin, McGillmartyn, (Mac)Gilmartin, Kilmartin, Marten, Martyn.

Martin is a common name in Ireland as it is also in England and Scotland. The Galway City Martins are of Norman origin and are one of the 'Fourteen Tribes' of that city.

Nowadays, even though the Gaelic Martins may write the name with an O or a Mac, neither prefix is used. These Martins are derived from two different septs, one a branch of the O'Neills of Co. Tyrone, and the other, also from Co. Tyrone, is Mac Giolla Mhartain in Irish. This latter name becomes Gilmartin or Kilmartin in English and means the son of the servant of Martin. The Gaelic Martins are now to be found in Tyrone, Fermanagh, Sligo and Leitrim.

Richard Martin (1754-1834) was noted for two main interests, dueling and the prevention of cruelty to animals; as a result he was known as 'Hair-trigger Dick' and also as 'Humanity Dick'. Violet Martin (1862-1923) was a popular novelist writing with her cousin as Somerville and Ross.

John Martin (1812-1875) was the brother-in law of John Mitchell and he was deported to Tasmania for his revolutionary paper The Irish Felon. Mother Mary Martin (1892-1975) founded the Medical Missionaries of Mary.

The coat of arms below is that of the Galway Martins and their motto is 'Auxilium meum a Domino'.
