The name is found in Leitrim, Clare and East Connacht and it is of the same ancestry as the MacCarthys of Munster. This sept preserved the book of St. Molaise for over a thousand years.
In Irish the name is O Miadhachain and is possibly derived from miadhach or noble.
Charles Patrick Meehan (1812-1890) was a distinguished historian. In France, Count James Anthony O'Mehegan (1719-1792) was a distinguished military man and his brother Chevalier William Alexander O'Mehegan was noted French author.
