(O)More;

Variant Spellings; Moir, Moore, More, Moreen, Morey, Muir.

Moore is a very common name in both England and Ireland and the Moores of Ireland are descended from Gaelic and English roots. The Norman Moores were called de Mora in Irish while the Gaelic Moores were O Mordha. Mora is derived from moor, a heathy hill, while Mordha meant stately or noble.

Although today the name can be found mainly in Ulster and Munster, the main Gaelic sept comes from County Leix where they were the leading sept of the 'Seven Septs of Leix'.

Rory O’More (d.1557) and his son Rory Og O’More were prominent in the Tudor wars, while another Rory O’More was a leader of the 1641 rebellion.

Thomas Moore (1779-1852) the poet and songwriter came from a Wexford family, while George Henry Moore (1810-1870) the politician and his two sons George Moore (1852-1933) the novelist, and Col. Maurice Moore (1854-1939) author and Nationalist came from County Mayo.

Rev. Michael Moore (1640-1726) was the only Catholic Provost of Trinity College, Dublin. The family name of the Earls of Drogheda is Moore though they are relatively late arrivals in the country as they came over during the reign of Elizabeth 1.

The motto of the Moores is 'Conlan Abu'.
